A boy has his first orgasm wearing spandex and is propelled into an insatiable world. His instinct becomes confused. Should he chase girls? …or spandex? This “forbidden fruit” pulls his strings and he is soon at its mercy, acquiring and wearing it through any means possible. He starts hiding away and dancing by himself in a flurry of guilty pleasure. As his paranoia amounts to a world spying on him, his secret escapades become increasingly outlandish. He keeps telling himself, "This is the last time!" but his record skips.
Meet Scott, a Lower East Side bartender reflecting on his days as a tech support rep, struggling musician, and real estate agent. Join him in a twisted tale as he interacts with a drunk and drugged-up New York City nightlife while piecing together a life fraught with the highest highs, the lowest lows, and the far reaches of narcissistic pleasure.

This is not my usual choice but I was intrigued by the blurb on Lycra.Ok, I absolutely loved this author's balls-to-the-wall style. Nothing held back, completely and painfully transparent, yet he manages to create an empathy for Scott that is deserved. It took a few chapters for me to recognize it was the Lycra/his psyche speaking at times. I have been a long term fan of John Irving, whose style echoes here, but this author finds his own unique voice in spite of the similarities. I did appreciate his tendency to employ a great vocabulary with an ease and flow for the reader. Also, the crass vulgarity that is devoid of kindness or beauty which can be found in novels such as "Running With Scissors" was thankfully missing in this happy ending tome.
Thank you for allowing me to enjoy this story without jerking my head back in shame or revulsion.
Great dialogue, humor, and well-developed short term characters that I will never forget.
Lovely, head-shaking romp.
Warning: not for the delicate minded. Filled with profanity, sexual descriptions, and perverse proclivities. Beware, you may see yourself here.

The Creative Curse Scott Gibson 9780692200735 Books Reviews
This is creative, fabulous and funny.
I loved this book for its poetic look into the the creative and often tortured souls of New York and beyond.
Have you ever loved something so much it took over your life?
Have you ever been in a battle with a bug?
Have you ever wondered how you got where you are?
This book is a ride through uncharted territory, where around every corner there is something recognizable.
I loved it and can't wait for Scott Gibson's next book!
Scott Gibson clearly has the gift of delightfully immersive storytelling. Allowing him to regale me with the story of his vices became my own vice, and I found myself up at 2am needing to stop myself so that I could get some sleep.
This book is well worth the read!
Read on a whim, the Creative Curse displays the new author's vision and obvious talent, a non-linear novel written in the first person, focusing on the main character's insightful and hilarious view of the world around him, and a fetish that devours him. Shades of many 20th century authors influence the prose, but ultimately the author has a style his own that will have you churning through the pages. An authentic, hilarious, manic, Gonzo novel - I highly recommend!
The three structure narrative of this novel threw me off at first, but as I read on the three versions of the protagonist began to meld together into something very unique and refreshing. By the end of the novel I was hooked, and I didn't want to put it down until this guy's spandex fueled drama came to some sort of resolution. It definitely delivers. The cast of characters that drift in and out of Scott's life keep things flowing. Definitely recommended for readers want something positively different or just)really like spandex too )
Having never read this author before, I picked up The Creative Curse on a friend's recommendation. I'm so glad that I did, because despite the terrifying picture on the cover, this book is fantastic. Gibson relates his story with a sharp, good natured wit that makes the protagonist irresistibly likeable, despite his faults.
Gibson's style can perhaps best be compared to Chris Leo, who also manages to effectively chronicle a dysfunctional life in a bizarrely endearing way. This is certainly seen in Gibson's depiction of a late night bike ride, in head to toe spandex. The ride culminates in a hilarious exchange with a police officer, who (unfortunately for Scott) proves to be "unfazed by style." As with much of this book, a scene that should normally be mildly disturbing stirs up feelings of sympathy and respect.
The subject matter, language, and style all mark this book as strikingly unique, which is not a bad thing. I would have never guessed that immersing myself in a world of spandex, cocaine, sex, and music would be so entertaining. The Creative Curse is absolutely worth reading, and Scott Gibson is definitely an author to keep an eye on.
